Patterns and Samples
What is
Pattern Making is the technical drafting of the components of a garment to be cut on fabric. It is done according to a Design, and following specific measurements. This technique requires good eye for design interpretation, precision and great attention to detail.
My method
Usually I start by making sure the fabric is suitable for the design in question. Choosing the right quality, weight and hand is key for the success of a design. Secondly the spec sheet must be analyzed carefully to grasp a good understanding of the design and if necessary clarify details with the designer.
When developing patterns for styles such as voluminous jackets and fluid, draped dresses I prefer to use Draping/Moulage technique to achieve in a more direct, intuitive way the desired silhouette. Even when using the flat Pattern-Making technique the patterns are tested in similar fabric , so corrections and adjustments can be made.
Planning the cutting lay-out and adding detailed information is also an important step, not only to maximize the use of fabric but also to ensure that fabric direction and pattern are respected.
